Vinyl Shockley New This Year! |
|
PERFORMANCE
DATE: Friday, June 15th
TYPE: Rhythm & Blues
WEBSITE:
www.vinylshockley.com
DESCRIPTION: The music of vinyl shockley has been called "blue-eyed
soul with a Stax/Volt twist", and Ed's "smiling, pensive voice" "reminiscent
of a young Van Morrison". As one reviewer wrote: "take the time to enjoy
this honest music that soothes the soul and moves the feet." After
successfully supporting others as a drummer, Ed Shockley, the guiding force
behind vinyl shockley, decided to finally pursue his dream. As a singing
drummer, Ed had been discouraged from attempting to "front" a band from
behind the kit. "Different managers and record companies had asked me to
move either to the keyboards or out front to more effectively lead a band,
and I've tried it all. But nothing ever feels as good or as natural to me as
singing and playing drums." So Ed went back to his roots to put together
vinyl shockley. "There is a type of music that has always appealed to me, a
little off-center, that reflects the influences that rhythm & blues and
hillbilly music have on each other." The way they come together, in Ed's
mind, is unique. Finding like-minded musicians to create this music proved
to be a challenge. After several starts and stops Ed finally found a group
of musicians that understood the flavor he was looking for and the band's
first CD followed.

Happy Feet [PG] Cinema by the
Surf |
|
PERFORMANCE
DATE: Thursday, June 28th
TYPE: Movie
WEBSITE:
www.happyfeetmovie.com
DESCRIPTION: BEGINNING
AT 8:30PM: In the great nation of Emperor Penguins, deep in
Antarctica, you’re nobody unless you can sing--which is unfortunate for
Mumble, who is the worst singer in the world. He is born dancing to his own
tune--tap dancing. Though Mumble’s mom, Norma Jean, thinks this little habit
is cute, his dad, Memphis, says it “just ain’t penguin.” Besides, they both
know that, without a Heartsong, Mumble may never find true love. As fate
would have it, his one friend, Gloria, happens to be the best singer around.
Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch, but she
struggles with his strange “hippity- hoppity” ways. Mumble is just too
different--especially for Noah the Elder, the stern leader of Emperor Land,
who ultimately casts him out of the community. Away from home for the first
time, Mumble meets a posse of decidedly un-Emperor-like penguins--the Adelie
Amigos. Led by Ramon, the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble’s cool dance
moves and invite him to party with them. In Adelie Land, Mumble seeks the
counsel of Lovelace the Guru, a crazy-feathered Rockhopper penguin who will
answer any of life’s questions for the price of a pebble. Together with
Lovelace and the Amigos, Mumble sets out across vast landscapes and, after
some epic encounters, proves that by being true to yourself, you can make
all the difference in the world.

Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers |
|
PERFORMANCE
DATE: Saturday, June 30th
TYPE: Latin Jazz
WEBSITE:
DESCRIPTION: GRAMMY AWARD NOMINEE:
Known as the "Godfather of Acid Jazz", Timbalero Henry "Pucho" Brown was a
pivotal figure in the Latin boogaloo movement that fused Latin, jazz and
funk styles during the sixties. He released a staggering 8 albums between
1966 and 69 for the Prestige label. Adopting a dirtier street soul attitude,
the "Yaina" and "Super Freak" albums reflected a change in musical tastes as
the 60s became the 70s. Unfortunately for Pucho the 70s saw a drop in his
popularity. He took to playing hotel gigs in the relative obscurity of the
Catskill Mountains resorts. Returning to New York in 1992 Pucho found that
he had been re-discovered by a younger crowd of music fans. The renewed
interest in Pucho stemmed from the UK jazz dance scene which championed a
cultural mix of sounds including boogaloo, street soul, Latin and Brazilian
music. Since then Pucho has toured the world with his Latin Soul Brothers
and recorded new albums that celebrate the unique Pucho blend. In 1999 Pucho
and his Latin Soul Brothers recorded a new album for CuBop, the San
Francisco label responsible for re-releasing many of Pucho's past projects.
Pucho has recently been added into the Latin Music Hall of Fame!

www.theremedyband.com
DESCRIPTION: Remedy was formed with the intent to provide a unique

flexibility components. As the group formed with many of the best musicians
in the area, it became apparent that the musicians shared a deep love of
performance, the music we play, a high degree of professionalism about what
we project to the audience, and the arrangements we perform. Good is just
not good enough for us! Hear us once, and you will understand the what the
magic of live music is all about. Our vision continues to be: "We will
always perform as a full band unit -- not as a "pickup band", always have
fun, be consumate professionals, and are all equally important to the
success of our efforts. However, none of us are more important individually
or collectively than the customers we serve."

Alibi |
|
PERFORMANCE
DATE: Thursday, August 2nd
TYPE: Modern Rock/Originals
WEBSITE:
www.alibirock.com
DESCRIPTION: Alibi's unique instrumentation, consisting of electric
and acoustic guitars, upright bass, saxophone, piano, and drums, generates
an open music style synthesizing rock, jazz, pop, and blues. This unique
combination originates from the diverse backgrounds of the five members of
the group, owing talent to their experience in jazz, classical music, and
even a barbershop quartet. Alibi's music was once described as "...the
instrumentation of Dave Matthews, the lyrics of the Red Hot Chili Peppers,
and the voice of James Taylor." Through maybe not entirely accurate, this
view of Alibi captures their elusive sound. It's hard - if not impossible -
to compare Alibi with any one artist. Half a dozen obvious influences come
to mind, through, such as: John Mayer, Santana, Pink Floyd, Ben Folds,
Coldplay, and Maroon 5.

The Dixie Cats Featuring Sandy Sasso
New This Year! |
|
PERFORMANCE
DATE: Sunday, August 5th
TYPE: Dixieland Band
WEBSITE:
www.sandysasso.com
DESCRIPTION: When she started piano lessons at age 6, Sandy's
lifelong partnership with music began to form. She remembers that at the age
of 12 she heard Brubeck's "Take Five". "For me that was 'the' moment. I
found the music so intriguing. It was like nothing I had ever heard. Don't
get me wrong, I was just a kid and I loved my rock and roll, but I managed
to listen to jazz whenever it was around". Sandy ultimately chose the
classical route for training in voice and piano, but left the coziness of
those hallowed halls after a few years. She decided to hit the clubs and
begin to practice her craft, her way. She never looked back. She ultimately
did receive her BA, (graduating Magna Cum Laude). Sandy sings with and for
the best in the business. Jazz legends, presidents, entertainment giants,
and some of the best road bands traveling today. As a young woman, she had a
chance audition and started working with a local big band. This eventually
opened the doors to steady work with the Dorsey, Goodman, Riddle and Pops
big bands. Sandy tours world-wide, while keeping her performance base in New
York City, with everything from small jazz combos to 17 piece big bands.
Sandy Sasso is one of the busiest singers in the business.

The Sherwood Blues Band New
This Year! |
|
PERFORMANCE
DATE: Sunday, August 12th
TYPE: Authentic...Bedrock...Blues®
WEBSITE:
www.sherwoodblues.com
DESCRIPTION: It's hard to say when the history started for The
Sherwood Blues Band, but if I had to pick one event that started the ball
rollin', it would be when I heard my first blues. It was a song by the late,
great McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters. When I heard that
sound, I knew my life's direction had just changed forever. I didn't even
know anything about the blues; I just knew that my life changed in that
moment. At that moment, a love affair began between me and and the blues,
and that love affair continues to this day. I was overwhelmed by the
simplicity and authenticity of the music, and that is why I have made them
an integral part of my blues. I call my style of blues
Authentic...Bedrock...Blues®. When I say bedrock, I mean it in the
geological sense. When you build a house, you dig through the dirt, through
the clay, and through the rock. When you hit bedrock, that's where you lay
your foundation. That's the way I feel about my blues. I play lots of
different kinds of music and blues, but my Authentic...Bedrock...Blues® lie
at the door to my heart. There is something about simplicity and
authenticity that moves me. There was a time when I was falling in love with
the genre, and I read everything I could get my hands on about blues, blues
artist, blues history, blues anything. Those artists had done great things,
and those great things were in the book I was reading. As I have gotten
older, and after I wrote my first original Authentic...Bedrock...Blues®
piece, "Two O'clock in the Mornin'," I began to realize that there can be
another chapter in that book. It is my hope and dream that I will write that
chapter.

Jamie McLean New This Year! |
|
PERFORMANCE
DATE: Friday, August 17th
TYPE: Originals
WEBSITE:
www.jamiemclean.com
DESCRIPTION: Jamie McLean is most widely known as the guitarist for
the New Orleans jazz, funk institution The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. He has
toured the world over playing for hundreds of thousands of people on stages
such as Madison Square Garden, Shoreline Amphitheater, and Fuji Rock. He has
recorded with everyone from Norah Jones to Dr. John and has performed with
The Black Crowes, Widespread Panic, North Mississippi Allstars, Robert
Randolph; among many others. While the Dirty Dozen Brass Band groove is
infectious and timeless, the sideman guitar slinger slot holds it's
limitations. Having always been a songwriter, singer and front man, Jamie
began to focus on his roots and in the early part of 2004 he formed his own
group the Jamie McLean Band. Over the past year and a half Jamie's
songwriting, filled with catchy hooks, beautiful lyrics and scorching guitar
work has mingled with the soulful gumbo of the deep south and while The
Jamie McLean Band is based in New York City, the influences of southern
rock, blues, R&B and funk is unmistakable. Jamie's music is rich with rock
and roll, dirty blues, beautifully crafted original songwriting, and if
Keith Richards and Van Morrison could have a bastard child this might be
what he would sound like. Rolling Stones (Exile on Main St., Sticky Fingers
era.), Black Crowes and the Allman Brothers are easy comparisons and while
Jamie acknowledges these artists as influences, he is just as easily found
dialing in Bob Dylan, Sting, Bruce Hornsby, Coldplay, or Eric Clapton on his
iPod.
